USS Mississippi (BB-41): The Brave Battleship
Mississippi’s history is intertwined with World War II.
The USS Mississippi (BB-41), a battleship of the New Mexico class, played a vital role. Built at Newport News, Virginia, this steel colossus participated in World War I and then joined World War II. Protected by thick armor plates, the Mississippi sailed the seas, supporting amphibious operations in the Pacific.
From the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaigns to the Peleliu and Okinawa invasions, this warship wrote her own epic in naval history1.
The Struggle for Civil Rights and Transformation
Mississippi was also the scene of the civil rights struggle. In the 1960s, racial segregation was a painful reality. The film “Mississippi Burns” reminds us how “White” and “Colored” signs marked the division at water fountains. Despite the challenges, the black community persevered and contributed to the transformation of society.
